A Christmas Getaway in Missouri: Spend the Night in a Real Caboose

There’s something magical about Christmas aboard a caboose.

Our Christmas Caboose decorated for the season

This holiday season, trade the ordinary hotel stay for something a little more memorable. Tucked away in Fredericktown, Missouri, The H&R Caboose Roost is a beautifully restored 1958 train caboose where railroad history, Christmas nostalgia and cozy modern comforts come together for a one-of-a-kind holiday getaway.

Just 90 minutes south of St. Louis, it’s an easy escape for couples, families and anyone who believes Christmas should still feel a little magical.

Christmas Aboard the Caboose

When the holidays arrive, the Caboose Roost gets its Christmas transformation. Twinkling lights, greenery and nostalgic touches make the vintage red caboose feel right at home during the season.

Inside, settle in with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee, curl up in a robe, play a game, browse the train library or simply enjoy an evening somewhere completely different from home.

The caboose sleeps up to four, with a queen bed in the main living area and our one-of-a-kind Conductor’s Loft tucked into the cupola above. For kids—and plenty of grown-up train lovers—climbing into the loft of a real caboose at Christmastime is an experience all its own.

Make a Christmas Memory, Not Just a Reservation

Some of the best Christmas gifts aren't things.

They're the places you went, the traditions you started and the stories your family still tells years later.

Spend the evening together aboard the caboose, explore Southeast Missouri during the day, come back for a cozy night in, and wake up to fresh muffins, coffee and a quiet Missouri morning.

No packed schedule required.

Turn It Into a Southeast Missouri Christmas Getaway

The Caboose Roost makes a fun home base for exploring Fredericktown and the surrounding area. Take a scenic drive through the St. Francois Mountains, visit local shops and restaurants, grab a cup of coffee in town, or bundle up and explore some of Southeast Missouri's beautiful outdoor destinations.

And if the weather makes you want to stay put?

That's perfectly fine, too.

Sometimes the best part of a winter getaway is having nowhere else you need to be.

A Little Christmas Nostalgia on the Rails

Long before it became a place to stay, our caboose traveled the rails as Rock Island #17040 and later Chicago & North Western #12575.

Today, instead of carrying a railroad crew, it welcomes guests looking for something they won't find at an ordinary hotel or vacation rental.

At Christmas, that history feels especially fitting. There's something wonderfully nostalgic about a red caboose, glowing lights and the simple excitement of spending the night aboard a piece of railroad history.

Your Christmas Caboose Is Waiting

Whether you're planning a romantic holiday escape, surprising the kids with an overnight adventure or simply looking for a unique Christmas getaway in Missouri, we'd love to welcome you aboard.

Christmas stays are limited, and holiday dates are now available.

Come make a Christmas memory aboard The H&R Caboose Roost.

All aboard for Christmas.
