A History Lover's Weekend in Fredericktown Missouri

Some places are worth visiting not because of one big attraction, but because of the stories you discover while you're there.

Fredericktown, Missouri, is one of those places.

From a historic courthouse designed by the architect behind St. Louis Union Station to a small-town square and an authentic 1958 railroad caboose you can actually spend the night in, Fredericktown offers plenty to discover for travelers who appreciate history and places with a story.

Start at the Historic Madison County Courthouse

At the heart of downtown Fredericktown stands the Madison County Courthouse, completed in 1900.

But there's an interesting connection you might not expect in a small Southeast Missouri town.

The courthouse was designed by noted architect Theodore C. Link, who also designed one of St. Louis' most recognizable landmarks — St. Louis Union Station.

That railroad connection makes the courthouse particularly special to us at The H&R Caboose Roost.

Explore Fredericktown's Historic Courthouse Square

The courthouse sits at the center of Fredericktown's historic courthouse square, where the surrounding streets and buildings preserve pieces of the community's past.

Rather than rushing through, park the car and take a walk.

Look at the architecture. Explore the businesses around town. And imagine how many generations have traveled these same streets since the courthouse was completed more than a century ago.

It's a simple way to experience a little Missouri history without standing in line or following a packed itinerary.

Fredericktown's Railroad Story

Railroads also played an important role in Fredericktown's history.

The city's former railroad depot still stands today and has found a new life as The Depot Cafe, where visitors can enjoy a meal inside a building that once welcomed railroad passengers.

It's another reminder that pieces of local history don't always have to disappear. Sometimes they can be preserved, repurposed and enjoyed in an entirely new way.

We happen to know something about that.

Spend the Night Inside a Piece of Railroad History

Just a few minutes from downtown Fredericktown sits another piece of railroad history — one you can actually sleep in.

The H&R Caboose Roost began its life in 1958 as a caboose built for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad.

Decades later, after its railroad career had ended, the caboose eventually made its way to Fredericktown.

Today it has been carefully restored and transformed into a unique overnight stay while preserving the railroad character that makes it special.

Guests can climb into the cupola loft, discover railroad details throughout the interior and experience something very different from an ordinary hotel room or cabin.

Where Old Stories Find New Life

Maybe that's one of the things we love most about Fredericktown.

A 1900 courthouse still anchors the center of town.

An old railroad depot welcomes visitors in a new way.

And a 1958 caboose that once traveled the rails has become a place where families and couples come to make entirely new memories.

History here isn't always behind glass.

Sometimes you can walk through it, eat lunch in it — or even spend the night in it.

Come discover historic Fredericktown, Missouri, and stay somewhere with a story of its own.
